In 1936, Jesse Owens, fresh off four golds at the Berlin Olympics, returned home a hero. But while he ran faster than gossip in a small town, he still had to sit at the back of the victory parade bus. That’s like being crowned king and told to mop the throne room.
Then in 1974, a president climbed aboard a helicopter and waved goodbye. You knew it was serious when even the pigeons didn’t bother to leave the roof.
And in 1969, followers of a certain cult committed ghastly crimes in California. Proof that too much incense and too little sense leads to very grim things. You can’t trust anyone who wears a robe outside of the bathroom.
Still, on lighter notes, it’s also National Book Lovers Day. So perhaps pick up a book. Preferably one that explains history—because it turns out truth really is stranger than fiction.
