San Juan Islands, Washington: Nature's Playground

submitted on 29 May 2023 by uslistings.org

The Archipelago of Eccentricity

Slap bang in the Salish Sea, there exists an archipelago that is quietly poised to boggle the minds of the unsuspecting traveler. I am, of course, referring to the enigmatic San Juan Islands of Washington State. Comprised of 172 individual islands, this aquatic playground would be entirely unremarkable if not for the fact that it is teeming with an abundance of natural wonders and wildlife oddities that would make Charles Darwin quiver with excitement. This is the land where bald eagles soar past your windows, and orcas perform their synchronized dance with the precision of a Swiss watch.

A Ferocious Ferry Ride

My journey began with a ferry ride from Anacortes, a voyage which I was assured would be serene and picturesque. Imagine my surprise when I found myself gripping tightly to the railing, my knuckles as white as the hull of the ship, as the ferry was assailed by waves of a colossal nature. I was on the verge of penning a strongly-worded letter to the Washington State Department of Transportation when the seas calmed and we glided into Friday Harbor, the largest town in the San Juan Islands.

Friday Harbor: A Town of Leisurely Peculiarities

Friday Harbor is a delightful little town that seems to have been plucked straight from the pages of a quaint maritime novel. As I wandered its streets, admiring the peculiar boutiques and the aroma of freshly-baked pastries wafting through the air, I couldn't help but feel that there was something… off about the place. It took me a moment to realize that there was not a single automobile to be seen, nor any of the usual cacophony of urban noise. This town, it seemed, was a place where people quite literally walked to the beat of their own drum.

Deer Harbor: Where the Deer and the Antelope Don't Play

A short drive from Friday Harbor brought me to Deer Harbor, a picture-postcard marina that seemed intent on proving the old adage that there is, indeed, a calm after the storm. As I walked along the pier, I was struck by the abundance of deer that roamed the area. I would later learn, to my horror, that the deer population outnumbers humans ten to one. Perhaps, as we encroach on their natural habitats, the deer have decided to take matters into their own hooves, and are now in the process of colonizing the island. I made a mental note to keep my distance.

The Island of Unbridled Joy

  • Orca Watching: One of the most popular activities in the San Juan Islands is orca watching, and it's easy to see why. These majestic aquatic beasts, dubbed the "killer whales," perform incredible aquatic ballets, leaping in and out of the water with the grace of a Bolshoi dancer. Be warned that these creatures are, however, a protected species, and any attempt to ride one will be met with stern resistance from the local law enforcement.
  • Kayaking: For those who prefer a more hands-on approach to their marine adventures, kayaking through the islands is an unforgettable experience. Paddling through the labyrinth of forest-fringed islets, one can't help but feel a sense of kinship with the early explorers who first charted these mysterious lands.
  • Biking: The islands are crisscrossed with a myriad of biking trails, ranging from gentle coastal paths to more challenging off-road adventures. One such trail took me through the heart of the island's forest, where I encountered a most unexpected sight: a field of alpacas, silently grazing in the dappled sunlight. I could not help but feel that this was not the first time these creatures had crossed paths with the intrepid island explorer.

Farewell to the Isle of Intrigue

As my time on the islands drew to a close, I stood on the shore, watching the sun dip below the horizon, its rays casting a warm glow on the rippling waves. I couldn't help but feel a pang of melancholy at the thought of leaving this quirky little pocket of paradise. It struck me then that the San Juan Islands are not just a place to escape the monotony of everyday life, but rather a space where one can truly appreciate the wonders of nature and the ever-present possibility of the unexpected. And so, dear traveler, I implore you to pay a visit to this enchanting archipelago, and experience for yourself the unique blend of oddity and beauty that is the San Juan Islands. Just don't forget to pack your sense of adventure, and perhaps a healthy dose of skepticism.
