The culture that bore “flummoxed” had little time for tidy explanations. Life on rough soil demanded a language that could admit mystery with open arms. Words like this were born from lives lived close to the ground—where one might be buffeted by weather, fortune, or the inscrutable decisions of a mule. Yet these people spoke with vigour and humour, never surrendering to despair. “Flummoxed” is not a surrender; it’s a pause—an invitation to shrug and move on.
